Flight Socks (Stockings) /Travel Socks

Flight Socks (sometimes called Flight Stockings or Travel Socks) are the easiest item that you can wear on your next flight to protect yourself from swelling and Deep Vein Thrombosis.

Swollen and puffy feet are a common problem amongst air travellers. Though uncomfortable, the condition is usually harmless.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) on the other hand, is much more serious. DVT can occur when the blood coagulates to form a clot in the lower leg. Sometimes a blood clot can travel through the bloodstream. The consequences can be dire if it travels to your lungs, heart or brain.

Trips longer than four hours by plane, car, bus or train are categorised as having a moderate risk factor for developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT - a Blood clot in the leg) or Pulmonary Embolism (PE - a blood clot in the lung) by the National Blood Clot Association (NBCA).

According to the New Zealand Air Traveller’ Thrombosis Study (NZATT by the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand (MRINZ) 1% of long-distance air travellers develop blood clots.

They are usually painless, but some clots can cause pain and swelling. Remember, it can be fatal if a clot breaks off and reaches the lung, brain or heart.

This NZATT study discovered that 10% of over 500 patients admitted to New Zealand Hospitals with a DVT or PE had recently travelled by air.

This is considerably higher than reported in previous studies and could be related, in part, to our geographic isolation. These findings add weight to the evidence that air traveller’s thrombosis is a significant public health problem, particularly in New Zealand and Australia.

Whether you are travelling by car, train, bus or plane there’s one thing many people forget to pack that will not only make your flight more comfortable by preventing your feet swelling up like a puffer-fish, but it can save your life.

We have created a free eBook The Ultimate Guide to a Comfortable Flight, in this eBook we show you some measures you can take to protect yourself from a DVT and swelling on your next flight. You can get your own free copy by clicking here

But, the one thing that will make the biggest difference is graduated compression flight socks, sometimes called flight stockings or travel socks.

What are graduated compression flight socks?

You might have already bought flight socks and found that they fell down. This is probably because they didn’t have graduated compression.

Graduated compression flight socks (flight stockings) fit firmly around your ankle and the compression gradually decreases towards the top hem of the sock.

This graduated compression helps prevent the blood pooling in your calves and pushes the blood back up towards your heart. This helps to prevent DVT and minimises swelling in your ankles and feet.

Look for the words graduated compression when you’re shopping for flight socks.

What compression level should my flight socks be?

If you’ve never had a DVT, we recommend a Moderate compression level.

If you’ve previously had a DVT, we recommend a Firm compression level.

If you have a medical condition, a family history of blood clots or are taking medication, we recommend that you have a chat with your doctor prior to travel.

What size flight socks do I need?

For flight socks to protect you from DVT and swelling they need to be a firm but comfortable fit, you definitely don’t want a one-size-fits-all travel sock.

The range of sizes of graduated compression flight socks should show as leg measurements: the circumference of your leg just above the ankle bone an at the widest part of your calf.

Choosing a size based on these leg measurements ensures that your graduated compression flight socks will fit you comfortably and won’t fall down or be too tight.

How long can I wear flight socks for?

Flight socks are designed to be worn for extended periods of time during long-haul flights.

They are more comfortable to wear if they contain natural fibers such as Supima Cotton or Tencel, both fibers are soft, strong and breathable, they wick away any perspiration from your skin, keeping your feet cool and dry.

Our most popular flight socks are Comfort Men’s which contains Supima Cotton and Comfort Women’s which contains Tencel.
