5 Benefits of Wearing Diabetic Compression Socks

If you are a diabetes sufferer and your medical professional has suggested wearing diabetic socks to aid with symptoms, it’s a good idea to understand exactly why you should be doing so. In this post we are going to look at five benefits of wearing diabetic compression socks, so you can decide for yourself if they are the right choice for you.  

1. Improve blood flow 

One difference between normal compression socks and diabetic socks is that the latter are not as restrictive. They encourage blood flow without feeling too tight and promote healing throughout the body as fresh blood carries oxygen to blood vessels. Thanks to improved circulation, your feet will feel warmer, which is especially important for those with developed neuropathy.  

2. Reduce risk of cuts, blisters and wounds 

Diabetic socks come with extra padding in some key areas where blisters and cuts are more likely to occur. With this extra support, you’ll notice that you are less likely to get wounds than you would wearing normal socks.

3. Prevent infections 

Wearing socks for a long period of time can mean that they can be a breeding ground for bacteria and fungal infections. Thankfully, diabetic socks are designed to be moisture-wicking, so dampness is eliminated, feet are kept as dry as possible, and infections are unlikely to occur.

While other types of compression socks may come in different colours, diabetic socks are typically either all white or have white soles, with very good reason.  

When you lose the feeling in your lower extremities, it can be difficult to detect if you have a cut or blister. If that wound is bleeding or infected, then you’ll be able to see the drainage through the white material. This would otherwise go undetected with colourful or black socks.  

You can also opt for diabetic socks with open toes, so that it’s easier to check your feet for problems without having to take the whole sock off.

Since diabetic socks have special padding around the toe and sole areas, you’ll find that walking around in them is much more comfortable. And because they come without seams, you don’t get the usual irritation rubbing against your skin. The materials that are used to make diabetic socks are non-abrasive, and you can find combinations of nylon, bamboo, spandex, viscose, lycra and more.
