How Diabetic Socks are Different

For many people, compression socks are likely to all seem the same, and one would be forgiven for thinking that they have the same purpose too.

But each type of sock has its own benefits and usually will have a slightly different design. This is especially true for diabetic socks, which are made and used in a different way than other compression socks designed for travel and pregnancy.

So, what makes them different? Let’s find out.

They are designed for everyday use

Like travel compression socks, diabetic socks are made to be worn for long periods of time or for short stints where you need additional circulation help. They apply just the right amount of pressure to assist with circulation, and can provide the every day wearer long term relief.

They are more comfortable

If you suffer from diabetes, then you’re more at risk of having sensitive skin. To allow more comfort for their users, diabetic socks are seamless so you don’t need to put up with the raised seams that many compression socks have. The socks we have at TXG have a seamless join that is manually hand-linked, and therefore aren’t bothersome on pressure points like regular socks. The material used is also more skin-friendly, and usually made from finer textures to reduce rough abrasion.

In addition to this, you’ll find some soft padding on the soles and possibly around the toes, which makes walking around that bit more comfortable especially if your feet are tired and achy.

They are more hygienic

Since diabetes sufferers are more at risk of skin damage, it’s important to reduce the risk of sores and infections developing. This means that diabetic socks are made out of moisture-wicking materials such as polyester or bamboo, so they are a lot more breathable and eliminate excessive moisture and sweat while being worn.

You’ll also find that most diabetic socks have an antibacterial treatment built in, to reduce the hidden risk of infection.

They allow you to check for sores and wounds

Thanks to having an open-toe design, it is much easier to check for sores and ulcers on your feet and legs without having to take the socks off. Many brands sell diabetic socks with white soles, so that it’s easy to spot if you have a draining wound.

They can protect feet and legs from injury

Some diabetic socks are able to protect you from getting wounded, with less chance of developing sores and ulcers.

They are not as tight as normal compression socks

Diabetic socks are looser than regular compression socks, so they provide comfort and ease everyday pains without feeling restrictive or too tight. It’s still important to get the right fit though, so that the benefits can be reaped.
